Two weeks after we learned about the shocking murder of George Floyd, and just days after his funeral, we all have a lot to think about, and a lot to account for.
I’m usually not at all shy about speaking my mind. So it’s no surprise I have heard from people who’ve wondered when I might make a statement about this.
But what do we have to add to the conversation at Good Earth Plant Company? Even well-intentioned words are so easily misplaced.
As a white Boomer man, what do I have to say from my position of privilege about the racial upheaval in our country? I am in no position to lecture or preach to anyone.
During my years on the planet, one thing is clear to me. I can never understand exactly what it’s like to live inside a darker skin. I can never understand exactly what it’s like to live as a woman or any other definition of gender. I can never understand what it’s like to live as a member of the LGBTQI community.
But as a person who’s always been interested in nature and science, there is one thing I’m good at. I’m good at learning. Nature always gives us a lot to learn. In my field, if you aren’t growing, you’re dying.
So what I have to say is this: The best possible thing I can do and all of us who believe in positive changes at Good Earth Plant Company is to promise this: We are listening. We are learning. We stand with you. We believe #BlackLivesMatter – Full stop. We will grow from this. Will you grow along with us?
