Embracing Fauxliage: The Benefits of Artificial Plants

Good Earth Plant Company has once again caught the spotlight, earning recognition in an article by The San Diego Union Tribune titled “Decorating with Fauxliage”. The article explores the low-maintenance, hassle-free benefits of artificial plants, highlighting our commitment to enriching lives through the beauty of greenery.

Our president and owner, Jim Mumford, first connected with the article’s author, Caren Golden, years ago when we were first creating edible living walls for restaurants across the nation. While designing and maintaining living walls remains a vital part of our business, we’ve increasingly embraced projects that utilize replica plants and preserved moss.

As technology evolves, so does the quality of replica plants. Gone are the days of poorly made fakes; today’s options are so realistic that they can be difficult to distinguish from the real thing! Manufacturers are now incorporating features like yellowing tips and bug holes to enhance authenticity, and many replicas even have leaves you can shape, allowing for customized arrangements.

Faux plants often receive mixed reviews, but as Jim puts it, “Sometimes living plants aren’t going to work in their environment. Without the right light and water, they’re not going to grow big.” This is where artificial plants shine. They enable greenery in spaces that may not traditionally support life, offering endless customization possibilities to achieve whatever look and feel the client desires.

For example, we recently worked with a client who wanted an olive tree with specific dimensions: no taller than 10 feet, a canopy no wider than 6 feet, and branches that didn’t start too low. While we pride ourselves on being plant sourcing experts, obtaining a tree with those exact specifications would be nearly impossible. Instead, we recommended a replica tree that could be tailored to meet their needs perfectly, allowing their vision to be brought to life.

When a designer calls for elements that are tricky to achieve with just real plants, we creatively blend living plants and fauxliage to create a stunning illusion. This combination enhances the overall design, resulting in vibrant displays that bring spaces to life.

For those seeking to green up their walls, we also specialize in preserved moss walls, which are highly customizable. Unlike living walls that require a thickness of up to 12 inches, moss walls can be as thin as 2 inches. We can even dye the moss in various colors to incorporate client logos into the design.

While these replicas are impressive, we advise our clients to remember that, like live plants, quality matters. Investing in high-quality replicas is essential because they can last somewhere between 10 to 15 years. And just because they aren’t living plants doesn’t mean they don’t need maintenance. Replicas require dusting and cleaning a couple of times a year.

As our founder Jim emphasizes, “I’m here to solve a problem for my client. We’re solution oriented.” This philosophy drives our approach at Good Earth Plant Company. We recognize that sometimes, living plants simply won’t thrive due to environmental conditions. In those instances, high-quality replica plants offer a beautiful alternative, allowing us to bring nature into any space without the maintenance challenges.
