I am in Boston representing Good Earth Plant Company and GreenScaped Buildings at one of my favorite events, the annual American Society of Landscape Architects Conference. Such a great group of people: friends, colleagues and some of the smartest landscape professionals you will ever meet.

Friday I presented a talk on “Obstacles and Pitfalls to Successful Living Wall Maintenance,” and while it sounds like a mouthful, it brings up important issues. To design, install and maintain a living wall isn’t inexpensive. No one wants to get a living wall up and ready to grow only to see it wither under a poor maintenance program. I hope to help my colleagues with the challenges they face when installing living architecture.

I will meet up with my colleague and friend Jan Goodman with Cityscapes Inc. in Boston, an interior plantscaping firm. Jan will have her hands full as a host city to the conference in the middle of holiday set-ups and installations.

My good friend Bill Lyon with Plant-Tech from Long Island will be there too. Bill and I just partnered on a project with Botanical Designs in Seattle installing a living wall at Natural Factors. A challenging install but always a pleasure being able to work with Bill, a consummate pro. He heads up the manufacturing of a product called The WaterBoy, which is an industry standard for portable water machines that keep interior plants hydrated.

ASLA is such an interesting event. I look forward to it each year almost like a school reunion. It’s a place where we can all share the ups and downs of the interior and exterior landscaping business. And you can’t beat the location for a guaranteed warm welcome. The strength of Boston and its people warms my heart.
