Case Studies
I have always wanted to start a blog post this way. “Don’t you hate it when…”
Don’t you hate it when people smash two words together to make another new word? It’s lazy. The words are always awkward. Athleisure. Brangelina. Resimercial.
You probably know the first two words, but I bet “resimercial” is new to you. Resimercial is catching hold and it looks like it’s going to stick just like athleisure for a lot of the same reasons. It’s comfortable, and it fits. FYI: for those who don’t know it, “athleisure” is traditional athletic clothing like yoga pants which are now acceptable leisure wear.… Read More
#StayPlanted with Purpose
This week, Good Earth Plant Company worked on one of its favorite assignments for the Alpha Project.
A brand new Alpha Project homeless shelter opened in a completely renovated hotel in Imperial Beach. It’s a safe and secure place focusing on housing families. We provided a little extra plant love to warm up the new residences. We donated some of our client plant returns for common areas and hallways, and anywhere else Alpha Project wanted to put them.
It gives us joy on so many levels. We re-home these plants where they can find a new purpose. It’s like adopting a new pet from a shelter.… Read More
We Are Learning. We Are Listening. We Stand With You.
Two weeks after we learned about the shocking murder of George Floyd, and just days after his funeral, we all have a lot to think about, and a lot to account for.
I’m usually not at all shy about speaking my mind. So it’s no surprise I have heard from people who’ve wondered when I might make a statement about this.
But what do we have to add to the conversation at Good Earth Plant Company? Even well-intentioned words are so easily misplaced.
As a white Boomer man, what do I have to say from my position of privilege about the racial upheaval in our country?… Read More
Good Earth Plant Company Working To #StayPlanted
It’s been both heartbreaking and heartening to watch what’s going on in the world today. For every bit of devastating news about the coronavirus pandemic, acts of human kindness and generosity give me new energy.
One of the harder hit industries is our wholesale ornamental plant and flower nurseries in San Diego County. My colleagues at Olive Hill Greenhouses, Leucadia Nursery, and FlorAbunda Nursery, members of the San Diego County Floral and Plant Association who supply me with the plants for our clients at Good Earth Plant Company have seen their business drop, leaving them with greenhouses full of plants with a limited shelf life.… Read More
Time for a Field Trip
Didn’t you love class field trips when you were a kid? I know I sure did! Anything to get out of the classroom and outside to see some cool things.
This hasn’t really changed much now that many of us are trapped inside offices. It’s the same clock ticking down as you try to focus when there are so many more interesting things going on outside. It even happens at Good Earth Plant Company once in a while. We forget to take time to get out and get a fresh perspective.
So our design and buying team of Rachel Hecathorn and Cassidy Braddy and I took a field trip recently to two of our favorite commercial nurseries in the North Inland area of San Diego County.… Read More
Time to Let It Shine
Are you feeling a little blue? You might be tempted to blame it on the hectic nature of the holidays, or seeing too much political talk on TV or social media. But it might not be the only reason you aren’t your usual cheerful self.
Several weeks ago, we went through our annual change back from Daylight Time to Standard Time in the United States. Just the one hour of difference means most people are going home from work in the dark, and it also makes us aware we are slowly losing daylight a few minutes at a time until we reach the winter solstice this Saturday, December 21.… Read More
Don’t Hire Your Contractors Based on Fake News!
Earlier this week, I found myself getting completely frustrated by a Facebook “friend” trying to back up a political opinion with some pretty suspicious “facts.” This person claimed all the sources were legitimate. But when I checked them out and dug a little, they were all sketchy. Then I compared them to my own independent research, and there was no doubt. Fake news.
Yes, I know, as you’re reading this you’re thinking – “Hey Jim, don’t take stuff on Facebook so seriously.” I get it.
But like it or not, people get most of their news and information online these days.… Read More
Show and Tell Time: Good Earth Plant Company’s New Living Moss Wall System
No one gets more excited about new products than we do at Good Earth Plant Company. We love the chance for a little show and tell, and we have something to show you this week.
It’s a brand new living moss wall system. Take a look!
The reason for the amber color is because the moss has been dormant and is just now actively growing. We expect to see it turn several beautiful shades of green.
One of our hottest items for the last few years has been our moss walls. There’s no sign of their popularity slowing down any time soon.… Read More
Go To The Zoo For the Pandas, Stay for the Plants
The “World Famous” San Diego Zoo’s two giant pandas will return to China at the end of April. Bai-Yun, 27, and her son, Xiao Liwu, 6, are probably the Zoo’s most popular animals (maybe after the koalas). So you’ve got about a month left to see them and wish them farewell. You might be fighting the crowds, but it shouldn’t be quite as bad as the superbloom frenzy. If you’re from out of town, the zoo is a must visit.
But a lot of people miss one of the most impressive things about the San Diego Zoo: the plants!
In addition to all of the animals, the San Diego Zoo has thousands of plants as part of the animal habitats.… Read More
Time For Thanks (Again!) At Good Earth Plant Company – 2018 Edition
It is (already!) Thanksgiving 2018, and I’m thankful for many people and experiences in my life. Thanksgiving is a good time to let them know.
I’m thankful for:
My mom and dad: far from perfect, but great role models and teachers. They set a good standard and give me plenty to both admire and laugh about. I’m a lucky man as a result.
My son Ted: just enough of me in him to make me proud, just enough “other” to make him interesting. We had a blast in Brazil this summer. He is going to save the world. You watch.
My daughter Allie: although she tries to deny it, she is way too much like me – plus smart, capable, creative and talented.… Read More
